FAQs

Invisalign and Clear Aligners

How long does Invisalign take for adults?

Most adults finish Invisalign in about 12 to 18 months, and mild cases can wrap up in as little as six months. At Cooke Orthodontics in Napa, Dr. Cooke uses a 3D digital scan to map out your timeline and design your aligners precisely. You'll check in with us every two to four months, and every case includes up to two refinements to fine-tune the details.

Wearing your aligners full time is what keeps you on schedule. We'd love to show you your own timeline at a complimentary consultation.

I'm in my 40s. Is it too late to straighten my teeth?

It's not too late. If your gums and the bone around your teeth are healthy, you can straighten your smile at any age. About 40% of the patients at Cooke Orthodontics are adults, and plenty of them thought about it for years before coming in.

Dr. Cooke checks your gum and bone health at your first visit, so you'll know exactly where you stand. Straighter teeth are also easier to clean and can reduce uneven wear on your bite. Your first visit to our Napa office is always complimentary, and there's no pressure.

“I recently completed Invisalign treatment and the results have been truly life-changing.”

Can I drink wine with Invisalign?

Take your aligners out before you drink wine, coffee, or anything other than plain water. Red wine and coffee can stain the plastic, and sugar or acid trapped against your teeth raises your risk of cavities. Rinse with water or brush before your aligners go back in.

On a Napa Valley tasting day, bring your case, keep your aligners out while you're sipping, and aim for 20 to 22 hours of wear across the day. At Cooke Orthodontics, we talk through Wine Country logistics with patients all the time, so bring your questions to your complimentary consultation.

Is Invisalign as effective as braces?

For most adults and teens, yes. Invisalign can correct crowding, spacing, and many bite problems (how your top and bottom teeth fit together) as effectively as braces when you wear your aligners full time. Some complex bite corrections still move faster and more predictably with braces.

As a Diamond Invisalign provider, Dr. Cooke has treated a high volume of aligner cases and will tell you straight which option fits your smile. At Cooke Orthodontics in Napa, you'll see both options side by side at your complimentary consultation.

How do I find an experienced Invisalign provider in Napa?

Look for an orthodontist with a high Invisalign provider tier, like Dr. Cooke, a Diamond Invisalign provider at Cooke Orthodontics in Napa. Dr. Cooke is also an orthodontist, a specialist with 3 years of additional university training in tooth movement after dental school.

Experience matters because the plan behind your aligners drives your result. We'd love to show you what that planning looks like at a complimentary consultation.

Braces, Expanders, and Appliances

Is my 7-year-old too young to see an orthodontist?

No, age 7 is the right time for a first check. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends it, and most kids that age don't need braces yet. At Cooke Orthodontics, children who aren't ready for treatment join the Cook“e” Club, our complimentary observation program for kids ages 5 to 10.

Dr. Cooke sees Cook“e” Club members every 6 to 14 months, tracks how their teeth and jaw are growing, and sends home an individualized report. If early treatment would help, she'll tell you when and why. We'd love to meet your child at our Napa office.

“My daughter gets excited to come see Dr. Cooke. She asks me when her next appointment is every single day!”

Katherine G., parent of two patients

Why would my child need a palate expander?

A palate expander widens the upper jaw while it's still growing, which makes room for adult teeth and helps the top and bottom teeth fit together. Dr. Cooke may recommend one for a crossbite (upper teeth sitting inside the lower teeth), severe crowding, or a narrow upper jaw. Expansion works best before the jaw finishes developing, which is why early checks matter.

Expanding early can make later treatment shorter and simpler. At Cooke Orthodontics in Napa, we'll show you your child's 3D scans so you can see exactly what we're seeing.

Are clear braces noticeable?

Ceramic braces are far less noticeable than metal because the brackets are tooth-colored and blend in with your smile. They work the same way traditional braces do, with similar treatment times, which makes them a popular choice for adults and teens at Cooke Orthodontics. They're a good fit when you want the precision of braces without the metal look.

Ceramic brackets are slightly larger than metal ones, so they can be a bit more visible up close. Dr. Cooke will help you choose between ceramic braces and Invisalign at your complimentary Napa consultation.

How much do braces hurt the first week?

Expect soreness, not sharp pain, and it usually peaks in the first two to three days. Your teeth feel tender because they're starting to move, and your cheeks need a little time to get used to the brackets. Soft foods, orthodontic wax, and an over-the-counter pain reliever handle it for most people.

After each adjustment, you may feel a day or two of mild tenderness. If anything feels off, call our team at Cooke Orthodontics in Napa and we'll take care of it.

Should my teenager get braces or Invisalign?

It depends on your teen's bite and how consistently they'll wear aligners. Invisalign works well for responsible teens with crowding or spacing, and wear indicators on the aligners show whether they're being worn. Braces are often the better choice for bite corrections, and for teens who might leave aligners on a lunch tray.

Braces work around the clock with no effort from your teen. Dr. Cooke will review your teen's scans and tell you honestly which option gets the best result, so we'd love to meet you both at our Napa office.

Sleep Appliances

Can an orthodontist help with my snoring?

Yes. A custom oral appliance worn at night holds your lower jaw slightly forward to keep your airway open, and it reduces or stops snoring for most people who wear it. At Cooke Orthodontics in Napa, Dr. Cooke designs and fits these appliances from a digital scan of your teeth. As an orthodontist, she also watches how the appliance affects your bite over time.

Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, so we'll talk through whether a sleep study makes sense first. We'd love to help you, and whoever sleeps next to you, get a quieter night.

“My husband says he can finally get some sleep. I never realized how much it affected both him and me!”

Caitlin M., sleep appliance patient in Napa

Is there an alternative to CPAP for sleep apnea?

Yes. For mild obstructive sleep apnea, a custom oral appliance is a well-established alternative, especially for people who can't tolerate CPAP. It's a small mouthpiece that gently moves your lower jaw forward during sleep, with no mask, hose, or machine.

Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician through a sleep study, and Dr. Cooke designs your appliance based on that diagnosis. If you live in Napa Valley and your CPAP is sitting in a drawer, we'd love to talk through your options at Cooke Orthodontics.

Do I need a sleep study before getting a mouthguard for sleep apnea?

If sleep apnea is a possibility, then yes, Dr. Cooke recommends a physician's diagnosis first, usually from an at-home or in-lab sleep study. Snoring on its own can be treated with an oral appliance, but untreated sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and daytime fatigue. It's worth knowing which one you're dealing with.

Once you have your results, Dr. Cooke can take it from there. Bring your sleep study to your complimentary consultation at Cooke Orthodontics in Napa and we'll walk you through it.

Will a sleep apnea mouthpiece move my teeth?

It can, which is exactly why it's smart to have an orthodontist fit and monitor it. Holding your jaw forward night after night can gradually change how your teeth fit together, most often in the front of your mouth. Most of these changes are minor and manageable, and Dr. Cooke builds your plan to minimize them.

At Cooke Orthodontics in Napa, Dr. Cooke checks your bite and adjusts your appliance if needed. We'd love to talk it through at a complimentary consultation.

Investment, Insurance, and Financing

How much does Invisalign cost in Napa?

At Cooke Orthodontics, the investment for orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign, ranges from $1,200 to $8,000 depending on how complex your case is. Minor corrections fall toward the lower end, and full bite corrections fall toward the higher end. Most Napa patients put about $500 down and pay around $200 a month with 0% in-house financing.

Your exact number comes from Dr. Cooke's exam and 3D scans, and you'll know it before you leave your first visit. Your first visit is always complimentary.

Do you offer payment plans for braces and Invisalign?

Yes. Cooke Orthodontics offers 0% in-house financing, so you can spread your investment across your treatment without paying interest. Most families put about $500 down and pay around $200 a month, and we'll build a plan around your budget.

Because the plan is in-house, you work directly with our team instead of a lender. If you'd rather pay in full, we offer a paid-in-full courtesy. Our Napa team will walk you through every option at your complimentary consultation.

Does my dental insurance cover braces, and do you take Delta Dental?

Yes, Cooke Orthodontics is in-network with Delta Dental, and we file claims with out-of-network plans for you as a complimentary service. Many dental plans include an orthodontic benefit, and our team will check your coverage so you know what to expect. Your benefit goes toward your investment, and 0% financing can cover the rest.

You don't have to sort out your insurance on your own. Bring your insurance card to your complimentary consultation in Napa and we'll handle the details.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for Invisalign or braces?

Yes. Orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign and braces, is generally an eligible HSA and FSA expense, and Cooke Orthodontics accepts both. Paying with pre-tax dollars can meaningfully lower what you pay out of pocket. If you have an FSA, timing a payment before your plan year ends can help you use funds you'd otherwise lose.

Check your plan for any limits on how it pays out. Our Napa team is happy to provide the paperwork you need, so ask us at your complimentary consultation.

How much do retainers cost after braces?

At Cooke Orthodontics, the Retainer Protection Plan locks in your retainer pricing for five years, including complimentary retainer checks and $30 replacement retainers per arch. Without the plan, replacements run $250 to $300 per arch, and retainer checks are $50 after the one-year retention period. Most patients need at least one replacement after treatment.

The plan is $746 at the start of treatment, $796 before treatment is complete, and $896 after treatment is complete. Protect the investment you've made in your smile by asking about it at your Napa consultation.

Process, Timeline, and What to Expect

What happens at my first orthodontist appointment?

Your first visit at Cooke Orthodontics takes about 60 minutes and is always complimentary. You'll get 3D imaging, a quick digital scan instead of goopy impressions, and a comprehensive exam with Dr. Cooke, who sees every patient personally. Before you leave, she'll walk you through a custom treatment plan, your timeline, and your payment options.

You'll leave with real answers, not a sales pitch. Bring your insurance card and your questions, and book your complimentary consultation at our Napa office whenever you're ready.

How often do you have to see the orthodontist with Invisalign?

With Invisalign at Cooke Orthodontics, you'll come in every two to four months. Between visits, you switch to new aligners at home on a set schedule, so you're not taking time off every few weeks. Braces need more frequent visits, with wire adjustments every 6 to 10 weeks. The Cooke Orthodontics team will give you your exact schedule at your exam.

Our Napa office opens at 7:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, so appointments before work or school are easy to fit in. We'll build a schedule that works for your family.

How long will my child need to wear braces?

Most kids and teens wear braces for about 18 to 24 months, depending on how much correction they need. Kids who had early treatment often have a shorter, simpler second phase, which usually starts around ages 12 to 13 at Cooke Orthodontics. Wearing rubber bands as directed and keeping appointments are the two biggest things that keep treatment on schedule.

Dr. Cooke will give you a projected timeline at your child's first visit. We'd love to meet your family at our Napa office.

What foods can't you eat with braces?

Skip hard, sticky, and chewy foods like popcorn, nuts, hard candy, caramel, gum, and ice, plus anything you'd bite into with your front teeth, like whole apples or corn on the cob. These can break brackets or bend wires, which adds appointments and can stretch out treatment. Cut crunchy foods into small pieces and chew with your back teeth.

With Invisalign, you take your aligners out to eat, so there's no food list at all. Our team at Cooke Orthodontics in Napa will go over everything with you on day one.

Do I have to wear a retainer forever?

Yes, most people need to wear a retainer at night long term to keep their teeth straight. Teeth naturally drift throughout life, whether or not you've had orthodontic treatment, and a retainer holds your result in place. Dr. Cooke gives you a clear wear schedule when your treatment at Cooke Orthodontics is complete.

The Retainer Protection Plan includes complimentary retainer checks and $30 replacement retainers per arch for five years. We'd love to help you protect your smile long after treatment ends.

Will I see the orthodontist at every appointment?

At Cooke Orthodontics, yes. Dr. Cooke sees every patient personally, from your first consultation through your last retainer check. You won't be handed off to a rotating cast of doctors, and the person who planned your treatment is the one watching it progress.

That continuity matters, because small adjustments made at the right time keep treatment on track. She's been caring for Napa families since 2005, and we'd love for you to meet her at a complimentary consultation.

Yes. Cooke Orthodontics in Napa serves patients from St. Helena, Calistoga, and Yountville, and Invisalign visits every two to four months keep your trips down the valley infrequent. Appointments start at 7:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, so you can come in before school or work.

Is there an orthodontist near American Canyon, Vallejo, Fairfield, or Sonoma?

Yes. Cooke Orthodontics in Napa serves patients from American Canyon, Vallejo, Fairfield, and Sonoma, offering Invisalign, ceramic braces, traditional braces, expanders, and sleep appliances. Invisalign patients come in every two to four months, and early morning appointments make the drive easy to fit around school and work.

We're in-network with Delta Dental, file out-of-network claims for you, and offer 0% in-house financing. Your first visit is always complimentary, and we'd love to meet you.

What's the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist who does Invisalign?

An orthodontist is a dentist who completed an additional two to three years of full-time university specialty training in moving teeth and correcting bites. General dentists can offer Invisalign, but orthodontists focus on tooth movement and bite correction every day. Dr. Cooke trained at UCLA and completed her orthodontic specialty training at UCSF.

That training shows up in the details, like how your bite fits together when treatment is done, not only how straight your teeth look. If you're comparing options in Napa Valley, we'd love to show you what specialist planning looks like at Cooke Orthodontics.
